As the gentlemen in the video you’d be looking at a career in the United States Air Force working with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) on the Space Solar Power Incremental Demonstrations and Research Project (SSPIDR). Which is designed to address space-based power collection and transmission capabilities.

There might also be a nonmilitary career working with the Air Force’s primary industry partner, Northrop Grumman. While space solar power beaming is not a new concept it wasn’t until recently that the technology saw a clear path forward. Working with Northrop Grumman, the AFRL established the SSPIDR project to mature technology critical to building an operational solar power transmission system for providing reliable and logistically agile power to expeditionary forces.

From their web site, “Northrop Grumman is working with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) on a project to rapidly infuse space technological innovations to incrementally develop component technologies needed for a prototype solar energy collection system. The project is designed to provide constant, consistent and logistically agile power to expeditionary forces operating in unimproved areas such as forward operating bases. These forces require assured power that will be transmitted via radio frequency (RF) from spacecraft.”

Air Force Research Laboratory funds the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) which administers a three-pronged approach to strengthening the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce pipeline that includes: the AFRL Scholars Program, AFRL Scholars Professionals, and the University Research and Engagement Program (UREP). This portfolio of enriching programs aligns directly with the Federal STEM Strategy and Department of Defense (DoD) STEM mission for the U.S. Department of the Air Force by offering immersive project-based learning opportunities for students and postdoctoral fellows.
